The triple concerto was written in the midst of important works from the middle of his creative period, such as the Eroica, the Appassionata and the 5th symphony. Even before the triple concerto, Beethoven had occasionally experimented with concertos for several soloists. After the Bonn Romance Cantabile, as early as 1802 he had begun a concertante in D major in a few loose sketches. Musically, however, the triple concerto does not go back to it.
